Farming is weather-dependent. We are willing to work with a variety of schedules.

About Us

Mama Bird Farm is a 9-acre organic vegetable farm located on San Juan Island, Washington. We specialize in heirloom tomatoes and baby greens, with a smaller focus on mixed vegetables and cut flowers.

Mama Bird Farm is managed by Mara and Lars, alongside our 5-year-old daughter, Otana. We employ 3–5 seasonal crew members and are surrounded by a supportive network of family and friends. Our farm is also home to dogs and horses.

San Juan Island is a beautiful place to live, with a close-knit community, a lively tourist season in the summer, and stunning ocean and sea life year-round.

Who We’re Looking For

We’re seeking someone who truly wants to farm on a produce and flower farm.

Ideal candidates are:

  • Highly motivated, positive, and detail-oriented

  • Strong team players who can also work independently

  • Physically capable with high stamina

  • Able to work efficiently and at a quick pace

  • Comfortable working in warm hoop houses and outdoors in all weather

  • Attentive to surroundings, job details, and equipment

  • Able to work while talking and communicating clearly

  • Committed to maintaining a respectful, positive work environment

Responsibilities

This is a field crew / post-harvest / delivery position, including:

  • Pruning and harvesting tomatoes

  • Planting, harvesting, washing, and packing baby greens

  • Field prep, transplanting, and harvesting cut flowers

  • Irrigation work (drip, overhead, and organic spraying with Pyganic)

  • Assisting at weekend farmers markets

  • Delivering produce to local restaurants and grocery stores

  • End-of-season cleanup

Requirements

  • Professionalism and kindness when interacting with customers

  • Ability to work both alone and as part of a team

Physical & Emotional Care Notice:
Farming is physically demanding and involves repeated bending, lifting, and standing. Employees must be able to care for their physical needs by dressing appropriately, hydrating, using good ergonomics, and taking snack breaks. Emotional and mental care are equally important — clear communication, honesty about limits, and teamwork are essential. Once the season begins, we’re all in this together.

Compensation

  • $18/hour starting wage

  • Raises available for full-time, full-season employees who demonstrate proficiency

  • Employees are encouraged to take home farm produce and flowers

  • Unpaid 45–60 minute lunch break

  • Breakfast on your own time

  • Bring your own lunch and snacks

  • Required gear:

    • Hat, water bottle, sunscreen

    • Clothes to get dirty

    • Weather-appropriate layers

    • Clean clothes for washing and deliveries

No-Thank-Yous

  • No dogs at work (please don’t ask)

  • No drinking or drug use on the job

  • No smoking cigarettes — tobacco causes disease issues for tomatoes
    (Applicants must be non-smokers)

Housing

We do not offer housing at this time, but we are happy to help connect you with housing options for the season.
